For over a decade now, American Express has held a “Small Business Saturday” event on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, spotlighting small businesses throughout the U.S. during the busy holiday shopping period.
This year, Amex cardholders will enjoy a one-time $5 statement credit by using their enrolled eligible card to make a single purchase of $50 or more at eligible U.S. small businesses by Nov. 25. Terms apply.

By using Amex’s small business map, cardmembers can find plenty of applicable places of business to spend their $50. For New Yorkers, for example, that includes countless restaurants, plus places like City Acres Market grocery store and even the 9/11 Memorial and Museum.

Remember that you’ll have to make a single purchase of $50 or more; if your $50 is broken up into several transactions, you won’t get your statement credit. If you’re dining out, that probably means bringing a companion; if you’re shopping, make sure you spend enough to cross that threshold.
There are plenty of qualifying Amex cards that are worth a spot in your wallet; here are three of our favorites: The Platinum Card® from American Express, one of Amex’s most premium offerings; the American Express® Gold Card, with 4 points per dollar at restaurants (plus takeout and delivery in the U.S.); and the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express, with 3% cash back on U.S. online retail purchases (up to $6,000 per year in purchases, then 1%.)
One or any of these cards offer ample rewards when shopping at small businesses. If you take advantage of Amex’s Small Business Saturday promo, you’ll get an extra $5 in your pocket for the holidays.
