DELTA

As is usually the case with flight deals, you’ll likely find the cheapest price for a carrier’s most restrictive fare type, which in this case is Delta’s basic economy. For this specific fare type, passengers are entitled to one free full-size carry-on bag, but they will have to pay $60 for a checked bag. They’ll also be in the final boarding class and subject to a random seat.

DELTA

If you book this deal on JetBlue or United, note that their basic economy does not include a full-size carry-on while basic economy on American Airlines and Delta does. Expect to pay between $25 and $45 round-trip to upgrade to a higher fare class and between $30 and $35 each way to check a bag on all airlines.

Maximize your purchase

Don’t forget to use a credit card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, such as The Platinum Card® from American Express (5 points on airfare booked directly with the airline or through American Express Travel, on up to $500,000 on these purchases per calendar year), Citi Prestige® Card (5 points on airfare),  Citi Premier® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve (3 points on airfare), American Express® Gold Card (3 points on airfare) or the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card (2 points on travel).
